The year of the monster king….

Although we have only boated one fish over 30 lbs, we have lost some really big fish….mostly due to lengthy battles and pulled hooks, very few break offs. The king numbers are lower than we would like for sure, but the size of the fish is impressive. All of the fish are well fed and above average weight for their size and species. This is due to the management by our Dnr…the plan was to lower the number of predators and allow the Alewives to re populate, well…this has worked. for 3 years now we have seen the baitfish numbers grow, along with the size of the fish. The lake has changed so has the fishing long gone are the days of 10-20 king salmon filling the cooler…I’m sure these days will return in coming years as the salmon plants increase.

We are catching some fat cohos and steelhead as well, the toughest part of late is the lack of a steady pattern….spoons, flashers with flies and meat are all producing but colors and depths are changing daily. This makes it hard to field a trolling pattern that catches numbers daily. Very few fish are eating plugs….Meat rigs are best for the big kings. I only run the Familiar bite strips, they are cut perfect and fit the bait heads well.
